Vega Sicilia
Rich and full-bodied with dark fruit flavors and a hint of spice.
This remarkable red wine from the prestigious Vega Sicilia winery showcases the power and elegance of Spain's Toro region. Made from 100% Tinta de Toro grapes (a local clone of Tempranillo), this wine represents the perfect balance between tradition and modern winemaking techniques.
Winemaking
The grapes undergo careful selection in the vineyard before being harvested at optimal ripeness. After fermentation, the wine ages in a combination of French and American oak barrels for approximately 12 months, followed by bottle aging before release. This process helps develop complexity while maintaining the wine's fresh fruit character.
Taste Profile
The wine exhibits an intense deep purple color, indicating its concentration and youth. On the nose, it presents powerful aromas of black cherries, plums, and blackberries, complemented by subtle notes of vanilla, tobacco, and Mediterranean herbs.
The palate is rich and full-bodied, with layers of ripe black and red fruits, supported by firm but elegant tannins. The oak aging contributes hints of spice, dark chocolate, and a touch of toast, while maintaining excellent balance and a long, persistent finish.
Territory
Toro is located in the Castilla y León region of Spain, characterized by its continental climate with extreme temperature variations. The vineyards sit at high altitudes on sandy-clay soils, which, combined with old vines, results in wines of great concentration and character. The harsh growing conditions and poor soils force the vines to dig deep for nutrients, producing small, concentrated berries.
Fun Facts
- Vega Sicilia purchased land in Toro in 1997, specifically to create Pintia, showing their belief in the region's potential.
- Tinta de Toro vines in this region are often ungrafted, as the sandy soils protected them from the phylloxera epidemic.
- The name 'Pintia' comes from an ancient pre-Roman settlement that once existed in the area.
- Despite the region's harsh climate, some vines in Toro are over 100 years old.
